We are open to gigging and private party opportunities at the moment, so if you have a venue and want us to play, get in touch.
11 July 2008: Sadly, Helen left the band a few weeks ago. No big fall out, just she wanted more time for other things and she lived the furthest away from where we practice so it all got a bit much. We wish her all the best.
We are still good to go, though, so don't let that put you off any :-)
We have the sniff of one or two new band members, perhaps. Keyboard, maybe. I'll keep you posted, of course. And I'll save altering the top image until we've worked out who's in. (John)
30 March 2008: The Rugby Club gig went really, well, together with Nostalgia we raised over £400 for the Heather Unit (not bad at £2.50 entrance).
We got loads of positive comments: "a breath of fresh air", "that last set just blew me away". Check out 20th Century Boy:
27 March 2008: Gosh, lots to say. We're really excited about the Rugby Club gig tomorrow (Friday). We're on with Nostalgia, and it's a charity gig for the hospital so we're hoping for a crowd. Also we're going to be using a great PA and sound chap so hopefully we'll sound great too. Click the image to see the article big enough to read.
Talking of sounding great, here's a recording of our version of Walk on the Wild Side. It's a beautiful thing. This came out of the studio session before Christmas but .. well basically we've mixed it ourselves, well, Jamie has. Don't forget there are other tunes on this page.
What won in the last vote? 16 February 2008: The benefit gig for the Heather Unit at Whitby Hospital is now booked, Friday 28 March. It's now at The Rugby Club, Whitby. There will be an entry fee (tbc) and a good support, watch this space.
21 December 2007: Votewinners were (in no particular order): Long snake moan (PJ Harvey), Girl on my mind (The Black Keys), Stuck in the middle with you (Stealers Wheel), Long hot summer (Girls Aloud), Everybody needs somebody to love (The Blues Brothers), The Dr. Who theme (BBC), and All shook up (Elvis Presley). So watch out for these tunes at our next gig (John).
3 December 2007: We have a regular vote for new tunes and we are in the middle of one now. The list being voted on comprises: Long snake moan (PJ Harvey), The league of bald-headed men (The Fall), No girl so sweet (PJ Harvey), When I grow up (Garbage), Ride (The Vines), Shot down in the night (Hawkwind), Girl on my mind (The Black Keys), Out of control (The Chemical Brothers), Stuck in the middle with you (Stealers Wheel), Could you be loved (Bob Marley), Long hot summer (Girls Aloud), Everybody needs somebody to love (The Blues Brothers), It must be love (Madness), The Dr. Who theme (BBC), Holiday (Madonna), Papa don't preach (Madonna), All shook up (Elvis Presley), and Deck The Halls as a Christmas tune (John).
10 November 2007: We have an embryonic YouTube site, so sign up to that if you like, give us ratings, share us about, make comments, you know what to do.
30 October 2007: Here's what's probably our signature tune, it's our version of The Wind by PJ Harvey. I think we love it because yes it's a cover but not many people would recognise it because not many people will know the original and we do very much in our own style. It's also different every time, and we like that, in fact, it's recorded 'live' in the studio and I completely dropped my sticks halfway through. Hey, that's rock and roll. So this is one of the outputs from the studio earlier this month: 5.6Mb mp3. We rather love it (John)
28 October 2007: Here's a snippet of video from the New Tavern:
13 October 2007: The New Tavern gig went brilliantly. We played from about 9:15 till midnight with a couple of breaks, started mellow and built up to a crescendo. It's the morning after and I'm still high from it.
We played probably the best we ever have, the sound was great 'on stage' and we reached that point Jamie always wanted: we know each other, and the songs, well enough that we can relax into it and really play with the songs. This came together beautifully in Your Love Gets Sweeter. Onstage there was a moment in Love Shack where Leafy started singing too early, cutting short Jamie's solo, and we loved it because .. it was as if she knew it was wrong but it was inevitable and she just looked back at Jamie with a big grin as if to say "I know, but I can't help it".
Personally, although I booked the gig, I was curious about how we'd go down in The New Tavern which has a name for putting on quality acoustic acts such as John Gomm. We're not that. We like bass and groove and dancing. Barring one bloke (cheers mate) we didn't get them dancing (maybe next time), but we did get a fair few people in and the landlord was chuffed enough to ask us to play again .. and on a Saturday night next time. Wonderful.
I'll try to put up a video of one of the songs in due course and Helen's beau had a good camera trained on us so we should have some decent photographs soon, I'll upload those when I get them. (John)
5 October 2007: We've been in the studio today recording what we sound like 'live' for a demo disc. We had a great time, all credit to JP and GreenDog for giving us a nice relaxing atmosphere and for all their efforts. I'll upload the tunes here in due course. In the meantime, I did say I'd torture them with this photograph.
Snaps from the day are here. (John)
2 October 2007: Looking forward to the studio this week, and the Tavern gig next.
29 August 2007: We have a bit of studio time coming up so hope to release those tunes here, maybe towards the end of September (John).
28 May 2007: The Falcon Festival went well, I hear there was a frisson of appreciation when we started Battle Flag, lots of interest in the electric kit noises, people seemed to enjoy Hotride, Fuzzgun Sniper liked us, and we think we got another gig out of it .. more later. I heard of people saying we are fun, engaging, and look like we are really enjoying ourselves .. gotta love Leafy for that. Someone said they can't help but grin while they watch us. Pics are here.
Oh, and much fuss ensued after the Battle Flag lyric "get up off your motherfucking knees". No swearing, apparently. No-one told us. Leafy asked the crowd who objected to swearing and two people put their hands up. Two songs later we came to our own tune "Shit Street". Could we play that? After a moment's doubt, like the nice people we are, we changed it to Pit Street "it's just a dirty pitty pit street!" It was great to look around during the last track, Love Shack, to see one of the stage crew energetically singing along.
When we thanked the stage sound guy for doing such a good job with our stage sound he said "Yeah it was no problem. I like bands who have their own production on-stage as I have less work to do, so thank you back."
Other comments include "You have such a good sound on-stage I don't understand why you don't do your own material". It's because we think there is honour in giving people a good time, we don't have the ego that drives others to do their own stuff, and people give plenty of respect to DJs and they "don't do their own stuff" in the same way .. they mix it up to create something new, and so do we.
From another band: "I really like your drummers' sound with the electric kit. We work with a drum machine and spend hours programing in the various sounds, so to see someone doing the same, but live, was fantastic. All the little bits and different noises make the sound much more interesting." He even remembered the finger clicks in The Wind, so, result :-) Another was "I thought when you did hotride you sounded great and full of energy". There were other favourable comments about the overall sound and energy of the band.
Our setlist: Walk on the Wild Side/Battle Flag, Relating to a Psychopath/I see you baby, Shit Street (our own tune), Voodoo Child, Hotride, The Wind, and Love Shack.
Star of the festival, I reckon, was Leafy's Revolutionary Poetess (pic). Big praise to all involved in putting it together, and huge appreciation to the sound people who created perhaps the best onstage sound we've experienced, and great sound to the audience too.
The Scarborough Evening News said beforehand the other acts include the DTs, who fuse Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side with Lo Fidelity Allstars' Battle Flag and mash up Macey Grey's Relating to a Psychopath with Groove Armada's I See You Baby and included a picture of us (Helen and Andy) in their review (John).
